Job Description

General Summary:
The Staffing Specialist is responsible for the coordination and implementation of multiple nursing units staff schedules within Inpatient Nursing Division at Metro Health Hospital.  


  1. Associates Degree preferred, Certification in Clinical Staffing and Scheduling preferred.
  2. Strong organizational skills in an office environment.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Ability to function independently with minimal supervision.
  5. Must possess strong administrative skills.
  6. Knowledge and experience with computer programs including, but not limited to: Microsoft Office (Word and Excel), Groupwise (email), API ActiveStaffer®
  7. Knowledge and experience with Xerox copier and Fax machine, and printers.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Staffing Coordination:
    1. Demonstrates a positive attitude and customer service skills when communicating with staff members, Clinical Coordinators and Clinical Directors.
    2. Works collaboratively with the charge nurses, Clinical Coordinators, and Patient Placement Coordinator.
    3. Maintains open and ongoing communication and effective working relationship with Clinical Coordinators and Clinical Directors.
    4. Maintains communication with all staff working all the shifts. 
  2. Filling Vacancies (caused by prescheduled time off, call-ins and unscheduled time off):
    1. Works from requests for staffing needs submitted by each unit to anticipate openings.
    2. Reviews API ActiveStaffer® Request Queues for employee requests to work.
    3. Independently assesses daily needs and contacts staff to fill holes in the schedule. 
  3. Maintain complex work schedules in API ActiveStaffer®:
    1. Organizes and continually updates changes made on the schedule and worksheets.
    2. Independently completes daily staffing schedules from the departmental master schedules.
    3. Maintains schedules according to Human Resource and Nursing specific policies.
    4. Maintains knowledge of individual skill/experience to provide adequate numbers of staffing resources including cross-training/orientation to multiple units.
    5. Creates and manages the orientation calendars for new employees.
  4. Time Management:
    1. Independently prioritizes work responsibilities and recognizes tasks which require immediate attention.
    2. Ability to multi-task.
