Job Description

General Summary:
The Respiratory Therapy Educator is a Registered Respiratory Therapist who, in addition to patient care responsibilities, implements suitable learning activities for respiratory therapists, nursing, and other allied health professionals.  As a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), the RT Educator is qualified to perform all respiratory care services and, by virtue of educational background and clinical skills, may also serve as a consultant for clinical respiratory interventions.

Requirements:

  1. Associate’s Degree in Respiratory Therapy.  Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  2. Credentialed as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
  3. Current license in the state of Michigan for Respiratory Therapy.
  4. 3 to 5 years’ experience in Respiratory Therapy required.
  5. Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider – required
  6. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider-preferred. Must obtain ACLS certification within one year of hire or placement in the unit.
  7. Must obtain AE-C, and ACCS certifications within one year of hire or placement in the unit.
  8. Demonstrated teaching and leadership abilities.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  1. KNOWLEDGE BASE—Maintain continual education through self-directed learning experiences as required to maintain licensure.  Review new educational materials such as books, journals and computer software. 
  2. TRAINING: --Present in-service education to nursing, respiratory therapy and other ancillary health care professionals on a regular basis.  Serve as the primary provider of orientation and education for new staff and students.
  3. PATIENT EDUCATION—Educate the patient and significant others based on the cognitive needs of each and as defined by patient outcome goals.  Provides caregiver training which enables the family/significant other to provide basic care to the patient.
  4. MANDATORY EDUCATION: --Ensure compliance with all mandatory continuing education in respiratory care.
  5. PROFESSIONALISM--- Serve as a clinical resource for respiratory, nursing, and other allied health personnel.  When needed, serve as a clinical instructor of respiratory therapy students.
  6. SAFETY/RISK MANAGEMENT—Follow established standards in provision for safety.
  7. LEGAL ISSUES—Demonstrate awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and department function and strive to manage situations in a reduced risk manner.
  8. PROFESSIONALISM—Assume responsibility for own practice including appearance, attendance, punctuality and flexibility in scheduling.
  9. LEADERSHIP/SUPERVISION—Delegates appropriate tasks to ancillary personnel.  Supervises the educational activities of respiratory therapists.  Lead or co-lead in-services for staff.
  10. FISCAL RESPONSIBILITYE—valuate, advise, and make recommendations regarding capital equipment selection and operating budget.  Balance fiscal constraints with operational needs in a manner which maximizes the value of the services provided.
  11. POLICY/STANDARDS—Participate with the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, Pulmonary Function Coordinator, And Pulmonary Rehabilitation Coordinator in the annual review of department policies and assist in the implementation of any resulting changes.
  12. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS—Develop, encourage, and maintain working relationships with all members of the healthcare team in the hospital and in the community in accordance with Metro's 'Best Practice Standards'.
  13. COMMUNICATION—Use written and oral communication through designated channels to attain desired patient outcomes as well as department and hospital goals.
  14. QUALITY ASSURANCE/STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT—Participate in peer review, quality assurance, standards development, and research activities.  Conduct, analyze, & report respiratory therapy QI projects.
