Job Description

This position will working varying days, Sunday-Saturday, 7:00a - 7:00p. Candidates must be able to work 7:00a-7:00p any day, Sunday-Saturday.

General Summary:

The OB Tech I, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), provides basic nursing care to patients, performs related tasks necessary to the functioning of a nursing department, and is responsible for clerical and receptionist activities. 


  1. Must have one of the following:
    1. Current CNA license
    2. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
    3. Medical Assistant Certification 
    4. Michigan Practical Nurse Licensure (LPN)
    5. Current enrollment (and continued progression) in a RN program recognized by the Michigan Board of Nursing in which at least one medical-surgical rotation has been completed.
  2. Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider is required.
  3. minimum High school diploma or GED required.
  4. Experience in obstetrics is preferred.  

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

    1. Assists patients with activity and hygiene.  This includes ambulating patients; assisting patients to the bathroom and shower; placing and removing bedpans, assisting with AM and HS care; assisting with incentive spirometry use; performing perineal and Foley care; applying and removing ice bags, anti-embolism stockings, and sequential compression devices; and transferring patients using wheelchairs and stretchers.  On infants this includes performing the infant bath, changing diapers, performing ongoing hygiene measures, applying and removing phototherapy eye shields, and transferring infants in cribs.
    2. Assists patients with nutrition.  This includes passing snacks and fluids; ordering and maintaining nourishments for the department; verifying NPO status; performing intake and output; removing patient trays; and bottle-feeding infants and documenting feeding.
    3. Obtains and documents maternal weights and vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure).  Obtains and documents infant weights, measurements, and vital signs (temperature, apical pulse).
    4. Performs Newborn Screens, Hearing Screens, Bilirubin Screens and completes applicable documentation.
    5. Obtain, label, and deliver specimens, including 24-hour urines, clean-catch urines, and puks for drug screens.  Obtain blood sugars using the Glucometer.
    6. Documents care given in appropriate areas.
    1. Patient Information Coordination – Maintain current patient information to facilitate efficient and safe patient care delivery.  This includes maintaining the prenatal files, updating log books about patient location, test results, admission, discharge, transfer, or scheduled procedures; updating patient information on the computer system; and coordinating admissions, discharges, and transfers with other departments, as applicable.  Schedules follow up appointments for patients and newborns.
    2. Receptionist – Assist internal and external customers who enter or call the department.  This includes greeting and directing patients, visitors, and hospital personnel; receiving phone calls and directing them appropriately; answering patient call lights and directing the request appropriately; functioning as the communication focus regarding patient care activities and patient location; referring requests from patients and family to nursing staff or other appropriate personnel; functioning as communication coordinator during emergency situations, STAT requests and orders; and communicating messages and patient care information to the appropriate people.
    3. Work Station – Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workstation for all members of the healthcare team to facilitate flow of patient care activities.  This includes accurately updating reference manuals, maintaining adequate quantities of forms, supplies, and equipment; and maintaining equipment in the proper order (i.e. computers, printer, phones, and fax).
    1. Use equipment and supplies safely and appropriately.  This includes operating electronic blood pressure cuffs; operating patient beds; setting up oxygen flow meters and oxyhoods; setting up suction equipment and disposing of suction canisters; checking and documenting refrigerator temperatures; cleaning equipment between patient use; storing oxygen tanks; and securing oxygen tanks for patient transport.
    2. Maintains and stocks postpartum rooms and nursery, including patient cribs.
    3. Performs quality control and downloads on glucometers.
    4. Functions to control the spread of infection.  This includes using aseptic technique; adhering to universal/ standard precautions; bagging and disposing of soiled linen; and replacing full sharps containers.
    1. Effectively Communicate.  This includes appropriately using the unit paging system, telephone system, and pneumatic tube system; answering patient call lights; reporting observations to the RN; keeping the RN informed about care delivered; and maintaining patient confidentiality.  It also includes the use of respectful, courteous, and professional behaviors in communicating with others.
    2. Perform other tasks appropriate to the scope of practice as delegated by the RN.
    3. Actively participate in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient work environment.
    4. Attend and participate in in services and meetings related to job role.
    5. Demonstrate flexibility in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts.
    6. Participate in temporary assignment measures.
