Metro Health – University of Michigan Health is seeking a motivated individual to expand clinical laboratory services at our osteopathic teaching hospital in Wyoming, Michigan. The Clinical Laboratory Director assumes the professional, scientific and consultative responsibilities of the clinical laboratory service including all sub specialties of microbiology. This individual will work closely with the Laboratory Medical Director and the Laboratory Administrative Director in maintaining a CLIA compliant laboratory.

Qualified candidates will support all sub disciplines of microbiology along with the development of new services. Active participation in Metro Health – University of Michigan Health committees as a laboratory representative is required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure that testing systems developed and used in the clinical laboratory provide quality laboratory services for all aspects of test performance. This includes pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing.
  2. Work with all clinical section Technical Supervisors to ensure that the test methodologies selected have the capability of providing the quality results required for patient care.
  3. Ensure that verification procedures used are adequate to determine the accuracy, precision, and other pertinent performance characteristics of the method.
  4. Will be able to provide statistical analysis and interpretation of data to support laboratory, Q&A and research department services.
  5. Oversee laboratory continuing education services and MLS internship programs.
  6. Support the Infection Prevention and Antibiotic Stewardship programs.
  7. Will provide support to the institution research department for laboratory services.
  8. Will be a resource to the medical education department and healthcare providers. 


  1. Must possess an earned PhD degree in microbiology or biological science from an accredited institution.
  2. Must possess certification or be board eligible by the American Board of Medical Microbiology.
  3. Possess at least two years of clinical laboratory experience or have completed an appropriate fellowship program.
  4. Meet all of the qualification requirements for a Laboratory Director as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act.
