Job Description

This part-time (20hrs/wk) position will work 3:00p-10:30p varying days, Monday-Friday.

General Summary:

Under the supervision of the Child Life Coordinator, the Child Life Specialist provides emotional support to pediatric patients and families, helping them to understand and cope with healthcare experiences. The CLS promotes normal development, encourages positive coping techniques for medical procedures, and strives to minimize negative psychological effects of hospital encounters.


  1. Bachelor’s degree required.
  2.  Certification as a Child Life Specialist preferred. Candidate must be eligible to sit for the Child Life Council’s certification exam and certification must be attained within one year of hire and department will track. Certification must be maintained.
  3. Must demonstrate competence in and understanding of: human growth and development, family dynamics, developmental assessments, therapeutic interventions, play and activities, childhood diseases, medical terminology, and written/verbal communication skills.
  4. Certification as a Child Passenger Safety Technician preferred. Certification is required within one year of hire and department will track.  Certification must be maintained.
  5. 1-2 years experience working as a Child Life Specialist is preferred.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Implement Child Life interventions and activities for pediatric patients, siblings, and children of adult patients.
  2. Provide opportunities for therapeutic play in the playroom and beside environments.
  3. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to support the team in meeting the medical and psychosocial needs of patients.
  4. Document assessments and interventions in the electronic patient record.
  5. Act as a resource to patients, families, and hospital staff for information regarding child development and how the hospital setting can affect the pediatric population and family dynamic.
  6. Support the Child Life Coordinator in overseeing all levels of Child Life student programs.
  7. Provide education about child passenger safety and instruction on the proper use and installation of car seats.
  8. Adhere to the Child Life Council’s Code of Ethics.
  9. Other duties as assigned with regular and predictable attendance.

Job Requirements

Highest Education Level Required:Bachelors Optional Licenses And Certificates:
  • CLCC Certified Child Life Specialist (Preferred)
